Setting up your e-bike for a safer ride

Preparation is key to staying safe when heading out on a delivery run. Setting up your e-bike correctly can make a huge difference in keeping you safe on the road. A few quick checks and the right gear can help you avoid accidents and stay comfortable during every shift.

Pre-run checks: The 3-Minute Rule

Before you log in and start your run, take just 3 minutes to check your e-bike and ensure everything is in top shape. We’ve summarized the key checks below:

  • Tires: When squeezing them, they should feel solid, not soft. Check the side of the tire for the recommended PSI (pressure).
  • Seat height: Adjust your seat to a comfortable height and ensure the seat post is inserted at least 5 to 10 cm into the frame for stability.
  • Brakes and wheels: Lift the handlebars, spin the front wheel, and test the brakes. Make sure:
    • The wheel is securely attached to the forks (check the quick-release lever or bolts).
    • The wheel spins freely without rubbing against the brake pads.
    • Brakes and gears shift smoothly without sticking.

These simple checks can prevent breakdowns and accidents, saving you time and money during your shift.

Gear up

Before you hit the road, make sure you have these essentials:

  • Helmet: Choose a helmet that meets CSA, CPSC, or Snell standards. It’s the most important piece of gear for every bicycle courier!
  • High-vis gear: Use a high-visibility vest or reflective strips to stay visible to drivers, especially during night shifts or in West Coast rain and East Coast fog.
  • Eye protection: UV-rated sunglasses or clear safety lenses shield your eyes from dust, wind, and glare.
  • Closed-toe shoes: Proper footwear reduces the risk of foot injuries and provides better grip on the pedals. Avoid sandals or flip-flops.
  • Mobile phone holder: Handling your phone while riding is illegal in most provinces and extremely dangerous. Use a sturdy handlebar mount for safe navigation.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing: Canadian weather changes fast! Keep a waterproof rain jacket or thermal layers in your bag to stay dry and warm.
  • Sun protection: Apply sunscreen even on overcast days, and stay hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion during those humid summer runs.
